Northern Skills Network update - Oct 2022

As a NELP member, you are also part of NSN.

During this quarter we have delivered two successful conferences, the Green Skills for the North Conference and the Skills Across the North Conference. Both conferences, sponsored by our partner NCFE, brought together providers and key stakeholders from across the North together to discuss key themes, challenges skills across the North and potential solutions. The Northern Skills Network looks forward to progressing the actions and ideas from both conferences and further supporting the skills sector across the North.

Held on the 6th October in Manchester, the theme was ‘Skills Across the North’, specifically the role of skills delivery and development in the Levelling Up agenda. We welcomed c. 100 delegates from a wide range of organisations across the skills sector including Independent Training Providers, Further Education Colleges, Local Authorities, Employers and many more! A number of speakers from national and regional organisations contributed their professional perspectives covering policy as well as place-based initiatives. Speakers included:

  • Henri Murison | Director, Northern Powerhouse Partnership

  • Kirsty Evans | Post 16 Regions and FE Provider Oversight Director, DfE

  • John Myers | Head of Apprenticeship Funding Policy, DfE

  • Sharon Walpole | Director, Careermap

  • David Gallagher | Chief Executive Officer, NCFE

  • Jim Coleman | Head of Economic Advisory, WSP

  • Subrahmaniam Krishnan-Harihara | Head of Research, GM Chamber of Commerce

  • Geoff Mason | Policy Manager, North & Western Lancashire Chamber of Commerce

  • Dan Fell | CEO, Doncaster Chamber of Commerce

  • Paul Cocker | Senior HMI, FE & Skills, Ofsted

  • Andy Burnham | Greate Manchester Mayor

The result was an informative and inspiring agenda highlighting the unique position that further education and skills have to secure a more equitable future for individuals and communities. As we aspire towards a Net Zero North the implications for a future labour market will be quite different from the present and it is vital that all have the opportunity to take advantage of this major transition … the further education sector will provide those opportunities by skilling, upskilling, reskilling
